Moving to a new place when you’re over 50 on your own? Yeah, it can be a real awkward situation. Everyone’s paired off at dinner parties, and you’re the odd one out at events that seem designed for couples. It’s just the way it is in retirement communities. The folks in Tellico Village, however,r have come up with a solution that makes a ton of sense: the Single Baby Boomers Club.
Why in the World did this Club Even Come into Being
It’s not rocket science; a lot of the social scene in retirement communities assumes that you’ve got a partner. The Single Baby Boomers Club came into being because people just got sick of that. The club is open to anyone born in 1946 or later who is flying solo. It’s as simple as that.
One of the club’s past presidents, Steve Kiger, put it bluntly: most groups in Tellico Village are geared towards couples, and it’s not exactly a comfortable place to be if you’re alone. The Single Baby Boomers Club is a place for singles. Here, you don’t have to feel like you’re the odd one out or feel like you need to explain yourself.
What Actually Goes On
Far from a dating club, the Single Baby Boomers Club is just a group of people who want to do stuff without having to bring a +1. They get together every month to brainstorm ideas for activities, and those ideas turn into actual plans. The plans include dinner at local restaurants, boat cruises on the lake, trips to local TN Smokies games, and holiday parties. Basically, they do anything that sounds fun.
Members also get together for happy hour before club meetings. Some also take the opportunity to go for a boat ride on the lake when the sun’s out.
Nancy Grzych moved from California to Tellico Village and found the Single Baby Boomers Club through New Villagers. A year and a half on, she says this has been the key to her actually making friends and figuring out her way around the area. When you’re trying to figure out if this new place is actually going to feel like home, having a group of people to explore with really makes a big difference.
Steve Kiger had a similar experience when he first moved to Tellico Village – he didn’t know a soul. But after getting involved with the club,b he ended up with some fantastic friendships. He probably would never have made these if he’d stayed stuck at home.
The Boring but Important Details
The club’s monthly meetings take place at the Yacht Club. They sort out the financial stuff and welcome new members. Then they get to the good bit (planning fun activities). Dues are ten bucks a year, and that’s it. In other words, it’s pretty low-key if you ask me.
The club is also always looking for people to join the board and lend a hand. There’s a need for fresh faces in most volunteer organisations, and the Single Baby Boomers Club is no different.
Why it works
Getting older and living alone can be pretty isolating. Not some big drama, just a fact of life. Having a regular group of people to connect with is kind of not a luxury – it’s a necessity. For anyone considering moving to Tellico Village on their own, knowing that there’s already a group of people ready to welcome them makes a big difference in their decision. The Single Baby Boomers Club is pretty simple – it’s just giving people a reason to get out of the house and have fun with some friends. And yeah, being single doesn’t mean being alone.
