Mabry-Hazen House
The Mabry-Hazen House has America’s most extensive collection of Civil War artifacts. It is a collection of over 2,000 pieces. This historic house served as headquarters for both Union and Confederate armies. This role made it a significant location during the war. Visiting the house is like touring the history of the Knoxville area. They are open Mondays to Fridays, 11 am to 5 pm, and Saturdays, 10 am to 3 pm.
Carnton Plantation
1345 Eastern Flank Cir, Franklin
Carnton Plantation was the site of expansive farmlands and the home of the McGavock family. The mansion is close to 200 years old. It was central to the Battle of Franklin, during which clashing armies transformed the lands into a grotesque battlefield. 9,500 soldiers died, were injured, captured, or went missing.
The last guided tour starts at 4:00 pm. Catch them from Monday to Saturday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Sunday, 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.
They close on New Year’s Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Easter, and Thanksgiving.
Dickson-Williams Mansion
The Federal style of the Dickson Williams Mansion tells the story of a family divided under one roof. A daughter married a former U.S. congressman, while two sons served as Confederate soldiers and another as Union soldier. The home is also famous as the location of General John Hunt Morgan’s death. A Union soldier shot General Morgan during a raid around the mansion.
Fort Pillow State Historic Site
The Confederate Army built Fort Pillow along the Mississippi river in 1861. It is now a massive historic site with various displays and educational activities. Learn about the 1864 battle and see some historical artifacts from the time. The 1,642-acre fort is renowned for its civil war history and breastworks.
